West Midlands Interchange | Ground Investigation
LK Group undertook factual ground investigation works to support delivery of the £1 billion West Midlands Interchange (WMI) Strategic Rail Freight Interchange — set to become the UK’s largest intermodal logistics site upon completion in 2034.
As part of the enabling works for Phase 1, The LK Group was appointed to deliver the site investigation. Our role was focused solely on providing engineering support to inform the dewatering programme for the main earthworks.
Our investigation includes:
- Boreholes for geotechnical and contamination assessment.
- Rotary coring to determine ground make up and rock strength.
- Sampling and laboratory testing to identify geotechnical and geo-environmental characteristics.
- Monitoring installations for groundwater and gas assessment.
The findings provided essential data for design teams, ensuring safe, sustainable, and cost-effective construction of the vast logistics and infrastructure network planned.
Outcome
LK Group’s specialist ground investigation services provided critical data needed to unlock the development, support major construction phases, and help deliver a site that will drive economic growth, create thousands of jobs, and contribute to the UK’s net zero goals.

Our rotary drilling services are ideal for sites requiring deep drilling over 30 meters below ground level, such as mining investigations or projects needing core samples. We offer both open-hole drilling for rapid progress to deep strata and coring for obtaining solid samples to evaluate bedrock geotechnical properties. Depending on the investigation type and water availability, drilling can be air or water flushed.
