Former High School – Land Remediation

The LK Group were commissioned by Bury Council for the Ground Investigation, Land Remediation and the removal of Japanese knotweed on two former school sites in Bury.

The Project

This project comprised the regeneration of two former school sites in Bury. The LK Group had previously carried out site investigation works for Bury Council on these two sites intended for market sale. We were then asked to produce an in-house design, where we allowed for dealing with constraints on both sites, including service disconnections, demolition of the existing building, remediation of oil tanks, tree protection, and security fencing, with ground improvement and re-engineering to the site. 

The Solution

The site investigation works that we had delivered before remediation had included the coal mining investigation. Following on from this, we consulted with the Local Authority and agreed on a suitable remediation strategy, tailored to the Council’s budget. Following key stakeholder meetings, we commissioned several additional reports to enable us to discharge the planning conditions, pre-commencement.  In addition, The LK Group tendered and procured a drilling and grouting contractor to deliver a site with no abnormalities, fully remediated and prepared for the build phase.  

Contaminated soils were remediated, and site-generated materials were utilised to construct piling mats.  All works were carried out under the CL: AIRE Code of Practice.

The Benefit

The LK Group provided a fully remediated site ready for development, with all pre-commencement planning conditions discharged. Our verification report was produced by our in-house consultants, with one point of contact for our client throughout. Combining both our in-house consultancy and contracting services meant that we were able to reduce our client’s workload, saving time and money.
