M62 Motorway
The LK Group was commissioned to undertake essential geotechnical investigations on the M62 motorway, focusing on subsurface analysis to support the planning of a new gantry installation.
The Project
Given the location’s heavy traffic flow and operational significance, the project required precise planning to avoid disruption. The work was scheduled for overnight hours to minimise any impact on the local road network and prevent direct drilling activity on the motorway itself, ensuring both safety and accessibility.
The Solution
To thoroughly assess ground conditions, the LK Group conducted a series of cable percussive boreholes reaching approximately 10 meters below ground level (mbgl). This method was selected for its effectiveness in diverse ground types and its capability to provide reliable geotechnical information. During the borehole drilling, strata were meticulously logged by BS 5930 standards, ensuring high-quality data collection and reporting accuracy.
The investigative process included soil samples that were extracted at various depths to assess the physical properties of subsurface layers.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were conducted at specific intervals to evaluate soil density and resistance, providing valuable data on the ground’s structural capacity.
Groundwater strike levels were carefully observed and documented, contributing essential insights into subsurface hydrological conditions.
The Benefits
By carrying out the drilling overnight, the team minimised disruptions to the local traffic flow on the M62, which operates as a critical transportation route.
The comprehensive borehole data provided accurate information on ground conditions, supporting informed decisions for the gantry’s structural design and placement.
