Trafford Town Hall Restoration | Project Management

Trafford Council appointed The LK Group as Lead Project Manager to deliver a complex, high-value redevelopment of Trafford Town Hall — a Grade II listed civic landmark.

The project aimed to consolidate six separate administrative sites into one modern, efficient headquarters, safeguard an important heritage asset, and deliver significant long-term cost savings.

Our Approach

Drawing on our extensive experience managing multidisciplinary design and build (D&B) teams, The LK Group led the project from inception to completion, providing daily oversight of both contractor and design team performance. We coordinated all aspects of refurbishment, demolition, and new build works to achieve a seamless integration between the historic and contemporary elements of the building.

The Solution

The refurbishment transformed the historic town hall, including restoration of the council chamber and creation of modern meeting spaces. The 1980s extension was demolished to make way for 45,000 sq ft of new, open-plan office space within three, two-storey wings. We also delivered a new public reception, conference facility, and an impressive two-storey internal street.

Notably, the building became the first in Europe to incorporate a heating and cooling system powered by a natural aquifer beneath the site — a testament to The LK Group’s capability in managing technically innovative and sustainable developments.

The Results

Through our expert project management and attention to detail, Trafford Council achieved a £2 million annual saving in maintenance costs, consolidated operations into a single, efficient facility, and preserved an important heritage building for future generations.
