Chessington World of Adventures | Ground Investigation

Merlin Entertainments tasked The LK Group with conducting a detailed ground investigation to assess site conditions and confirm the suitability of foundation structures for the development.

The Solution

To meet the project’s requirements, our team carried out a structured site investigation, beginning with a Preliminary Risk Assessment (PRA) to evaluate site conditions before breaking ground. We then conducted a range of tests, including cable percussive boreholes, soakaway testing, trial pits, and hand-dug pits, to assess geology and contamination levels. Additionally, California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests were performed to determine ground strength. To facilitate smooth drilling and testing on-site, we collaborated with WEBB Groundworks to construct a temporary access ramp.

Client Benefits

The investigation was carefully planned to navigate site constraints, including ongoing demolition work, limited space, and the site’s proximity to existing attractions and operational areas. By efficiently coordinating resources, we ensured minimal disruption while maintaining a high standard of work.

Thanks to the rapid deployment of our investigation teams, the project was initiated ahead of schedule. What was originally planned as a six-day ground investigation was completed in just four days, enabling the client to move forward sooner than anticipated.

Through strategic planning, effective problem-solving, and seamless collaboration with multiple stakeholders, we played a key role in helping Merlin Entertainments advance its vision for an enhanced theme park experience.
