Outline Drainage Strategy & FRA – Somerset
The LK Group was appointed by Gladman Developments to provide a comprehensive Flood Risk Assessment and Sustainable Drainage Strategy on this farmland site, for a residential scheme of 100 dwellings, comprising up to 40% affordable housing, new publicly accessible green space and walking routes to connect with the existing public footpaths. A previous application had been refused by the local planners in 2014 and 2015.
KEY FACTS
THE SOLUTION
We provided a detailed quantitative assessment of the flood risks associated with the site, recommending Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) elements such as detention basins and swales. These would provide surface water storage, with an allowance for climate change, resulting in reduced flood risk both on and off site. Creating potential for improving the local ecosystems would increase biodiversity and provide attractive amenity areas.
Our client was concerned by the existing topography, local ground conditions and remote location of potential outflows from the site. By finding a way for the runoff outflow to be connected and involving suitable SuDS, we were able to recommend the most cost-effective solution.
